France recently declared war on food waste to combat hunger and global warming. This post by the World Economic Forum describes the program and its goals:

Food releases planet-warming gases as it decomposes in landfills. The food the world wastes accounts for more greenhouse gas emissions than any country except for China and the United States.
“What is really important is the vision and importance of (food sustainability) in these governments’ agendas and policies,” Irene Mia, global editorial director at the EIU, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
Laudable goals, no doubt, but I was struck by the fact that the picture used in the post showed meat wrapped in polystyrene, a fossil fuel-derived plastic that is damaging our planet on many levels. Until we address the immorality of product packaging, it is disingenuous to pat ourselves on the back.
